The Nairobi Cable Transit project is currently a finalist for the C40 ( global initiative on carbon emission reduction. As a finalist, the project is being considered based upon its green status and sustainable operating model. The aim of C40 is to address global climante change by supporting the development of infrastructure projects which seek to reduce carbon emissions.
The 25 year concession agreement between Trapos Africa LTD(TAL) and Kenya Ferry Services(KFS) is now being concluded for the development of the Likoni Cable Express (LCE) project.At this point project ground breaking is anticipated by February 2017. Full operations are anticipated in July 2018.
The feasibility study for the Nairobi Cable Transit (NCT) project is expected to be concluded by September 2016. The concession agreement will be expected to be concluded between Trapos Africa Limited and the Nairobi City County Government by December 2016.Project ground breaking will be expected to commence by August 2018 with full operations beginning by December 2018.
Trapos Africa Limited has recently been granted authorization by the Mombasa County Government to begin the PPP approval process for an aerial masterplan covering 13 kilometers. The project's feasibility study is expected to commence by August 2016 and shall be concluded by November 2016.The concession agreement is expected to be concluded by April 2017. Tentatively, project ground breaking is expected by November 2017 with project operations commencing by February 2019.

It is expected that Trapos Africa Limited would by January 2016 begin the construction of towers, stations and connecting network cables along the route. The project, which will be the pilot and key contributor to the larger Mombasa Integrated Mass Transit Plan, is expected to be fully completed and commissioned by April 2017. When the project is commissioned, travel time between the Island and the mainland that takes about 10 minutes, will take less than three minutes; a massive improvement for the people that are commuting between the two points,” he said.
Dr Mwarania said they were working with CFC Stanbic Bank as the lead financier for the project that they expect to be operational by July 2017.
Trapos Africa was in a workshop in Mombasa with Kenya Bureau of Standards to develop cable car standards. An additional meeting was held in Naivasha in September 2015 to conclude this process. In early December of 2015, the workshop standards were adopted by KEBS
The project is sponsored by Trapos Africa Limited who has contracted Doppelmayr, a Swiss/Austrian specialist company that manufactures chairlifts, cable cars, gondolas, surface tows for ski and amusement parks as well as urban transport systems, to provide project technology; and CFC Stanbic Bank to arrange for project funding. The project is estimated to cost Sh3.6 billion (USD41 million).Trapos Limited is expected to conclude a 30 year concession agreement between Likoni Cable Express and contracting authority, Kenya Ferry Services.
Dr. Eustace Mwarania, Trapos Africa chairman, said a pilot project will run from Embakasi, Donholm to Muthurwa and then proceed to Jamhuri, Kibera and Nyayo National Stadium.“We want to free Nairobi from the usual traffic jams and this can only be achieved by embracing cable car technology,” Mwarania told Business Daily.He said the cable cars will be carrying carrying 35 people each and can go up to 30 kilometres per hour. The consultant said passengers will pay fixed fares.
